What I teach

Creative thinking, critical thinking, design and composition, abstraction, methods and materials, and Olympic speed knitting. But the emphasis is on how to think for yourself and find your own voice as an artist. I’ve worked extensively in oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, pastel, and mixed media as a fine artist and an illustrator, which was one of the greatest training grounds for creative thinking out there. When I teach, I give 110%, and if you use metric, 220%.

Some nice things people said about my classes:

“Prior to taking this class, I was “stuck”. And unfortunately, being stuck is an ambiguous problem. The exercises in this class (and the book) gave me a framework to build on rather than a vast open space of possibilities. I also appreciated the concept of focusing on the process rather than the product. That was all I truly needed to get moving forward again.”

“This class has been a joy, unlike any I have ever taken. Larry is a serious painter, multilayered, with a light touch. All of which I am most grateful for. My boundaries have been pushed, that is only a good thing. I am enjoying my abstract painting as it is taking on a life of its own. What a gift this is!”

“I loved pushing my brain toward different ways of thinking about making paintings!”

New video: The Creativity Course.

I’ve finished filming a video through Streamline on abstracting/interpreting the landscape that covers the core principles of creative expression, design, creative exploration and so much more.

It’s a 5 hour class that covers the 7 principles of creative expression (design). How to explore new territory and most importantly, how to think and assess the new work.

There are 3 demos, 2 in gouache and one in oil where I enter into new terrain and talk my way through the processes.

It is now available through Paint Tube. You can watch the trailer and get purchase info here:

Principles of Abstraction and

The abstracted landscape.

All classes focus on the seven tenets of design, new ways to think about making art, and learning a system to develop one’s authentic voice. Open to all levels of ability, though an understanding of color and paint mechanics (layering, mediums, brushwork, etc) will help greatly. You can work in any medium, but demos will be in gouache, acrylic, or oil. Bring an open mind and a sense of humor. The links to each date/location will provide more info and sign-up.

The abstracted landscape (or Abstraction from nature)

This 3-day class in Daniel Island, SC covers the fundamental tenets of design in art. It’s not specifically a non-objective (pure abstract) class, you get to decide the level of abstraction you wish to explore. This is a learn-how-to-think class where you receive a process that you can use to explore new ideas. It’s a crash course on finding authenticity in your work. We cover the seven tenets of creative expression and the language of art. Larry’s intent is to help each artist find a way that works that is unique to them, whether they wish to interpret from life, push their process, or go fully abstract.

August 5-9 Rockland ME The abstracted landscape

Five day class in an amazing location $790

One of my all-time favorite places to teach. Boundless scenery, a roomy studio with a broad view of the harbor, boats, a boat builder right in the back yard. August is perfect as the first cold fronts don’t hit till September. We work in the studio the first few days and outside the rest, tho you can do the whole thing outside if you wish.
